How to make an image-based PDF smaller

Reduce the size of a PDF made from images, understand the quality trade-off, and check small text before submitting.

Start with the actual upload limit

Check whether the limit applies to one file or the combined attachments, and whether it is stated in MB or KB. The converter displays the generated file size, but no quality option can guarantee a particular limit. Repeatedly converting a file to PDF does not automatically make it smaller.

Regenerate with Smaller file

Smaller file limits each image’s longest edge to 1600 pixels and uses stronger JPEG compression. Clear keeps up to 3000 pixels. Neither mode enlarges small originals. Try Smaller file and inspect the output, especially pages with tiny text, stamps, or numbers.

Remove unnecessary pages, keep the originals

Remove duplicates, blank screenshots, and pages that do not belong in the submission. If the file is still too large and the recipient permits it, create several smaller PDFs with clear sequential filenames. Compression removes some image detail: keep the original photos rather than treating the compressed version as your only archive.

What does not reliably reduce file size

Switching A4 to Letter or reducing margins mainly changes page layout, not the pixel count of the embedded images. PDF creation cannot repair a blurry original or add a searchable text layer. If small text is already unreadable, take a clearer photo instead of applying more compression.
